Is Greed Good?

The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you very much.

Before there was Wolf of Wall Street there was Wall Street? What is Michael Douglas' character Gordan Gecko saying in this classic quote from the movie? Do you agree or disagree with his opinion?

What is the difference between a 'Robber Baron' and a 'Captain of Industry?'  Which is Warren Buffet?  Donald Trump?

Look at the chart: Legacy of the Bushiness Tycoons. Which of these views is most similar to that of Gordan Gecko? (click below to enlarge)

Of course lets not forget the demise of Augustus Gloop.

  3. The views were different because Josephson thought it was a disaster because it was uncontrolled and Folsom thought it was a good thing because helped prices drop and more people used these resources and they became cheaper. His main defense was how prices dropped from this and things were cheaper because of it and how it was helpful and made things become cheaper. -Haley Roos-

  5. I think greed in controlled amounts is good, It makes you keep trying to achieve your goals. But if it is too much greed it can be a bad thing because you can get desperate and be willing to do anything to get what they want. -cody crawford period 6

  6. I think greed is good in certain amounts, it helps people achieve what is necessary. If greed is in too large of amounts if can be bad because people will try too hard and will do anything it takes to get what they want

  7. Greed is good because its hard earned money and you shouldn't have to share it with anybody. Some people just have a better way of saving their money. There is a difference between mean greed or a greed that you have longed to achieve for that certain amount. -K-mack, and Little mack.-

  10. I believe greed is a good thing, but it could also be a bad thing. For example Bill Gates made tons of money and now gives it away for charity. This is a good thing. While if greed is not controlled it could lead to things getting out of hand and a person doing things they normally wouldn't do. - Grant James 6.

  11. I believe that greed can be a good and bad thing, it all depends on the way you handle the situation to use greed. If you are like Folsom and used your money for a good thing, unlike josephson who used his money to get things that weren't relevant and he just caused more problems.

  13. Greed can be good to a certain level. For example Folsom used greed to build up businesses and help out the community. But Josephson on the other hand when presented with money will use it to get things that are not relevant and will cause more problems. -Jonathan Caudill

  19. greed is good up to a certain point, It is good when you work hard to get what you want and have the drive, but it becomes bad when you have what you want but want more and more of and push people to get it.

  20. I think greed is bad. The difference between Josephson and Folsom is that the example Folsom gives is not an example of greed. Being rich does not necessarily mean that you are greedy, you might just have better luck. Greed is having all of that money and saving it for yourself. Rockefeller was not greedy. He used his riches to make kerosene cheaper for the rest of the Americans. Using his money in that way does not make him greedy at all. -Gracelyn Stitzel

  21. I believe that greed is good. This is how the buisinessmen did the best to lower their prices so that they didn't loose any of their custumers to rival companies

  22. I believe that greed is bad. I think motivation is good thing but you should be motivated by success and not greed. I believe the that these guys were not wrong though to monopolize their companys because most of them gave back in the end.

  23. I think greed is bad. I think that being greedy is not wanting to share your money and wanting to keep it all for yourself. The people that gave money to other people that needed are not greedy. I think that during the time of these men that they were captains of industry. You don't have to be greedy if you are rich I think you choose weather to be greedy.

  24. I think greed is good to a certain extent. Folsom is an example of someone who took greed too far and was stepping on other people to get to where he wanted to go. Greed can be good though because people have to think about themselves sometimes but not when you make everyone around you miserable.

  26. Greed is a good thing as it drives us towards a common goal in which it strengthens our great country. Greed poses as a focus point in our efforts to grow this country. This country wouldn't be the way it is without greed of people that drove this country to its greatness. These people set the foundation of this great country to build apon.

  28. Greed is good until you start working less than what you're getting payed. Once you take your wages for granted and not give anything in return that's when greed starts to become bad.

  29. Being greedy is not a good thing because it could lead you to becoming a very self-centered person. Money can buy you a lot but it can't buy you do-overs in certain situations. You will let the money start consuming your thoughts and it will start taking up all your time. You'll start forgetting friends and family. - Jasmine Smith

  33. It depends what view you have. Josephson thinks greed is bad because all greed it did was cause problems for everyone. Folsom thought greed was good because with the money that Rockafeller had, he was able to cut costs on oil and other resources.

  36. It could go either way. Yes, greed makes you want to strive and want to achieve your goals. This gets you what you want, and could become very beneficial for you at this point. But too much greed can be a very bad thing. Make you forget the important things in your life. Friends and family start getting left behind. Money's not all that great, if you have no one to share it with. People in these positions get lonely most of the time.
